This last weekend was quite the unexpected with bad weather that had came through. Three days of storms, producing heavy rain, strong winds, hail and tornados around the country. Fortunate to say we had very little damage if any, just small hail but strong winds with a lot of rain. Over the last 3 days the total rain fall came up to 3.75". With as much rain as we have recieved this last month may cause a small loss of nests from ducks and pheasants. But with it being early enough, they will rebuild they nest and start all over again until at least one chick or duckling is hatched.

With decent amount of rainfall over a period of time to finally getting in the field, things are looking good. With the break between rain falls, you could sure see the grass grow and trees turn green. Today we are getting another nice heavy rain that will last most of the day. Witch will set us back another week for getting into the fields, so no complaints at all.

The wildlife around the country is doing great. Duck and geese are all paired up, with numerous amount of number throughout the area. The pheasants couldn't have had a better winter. There was very little stress on the birds and very little loss. We are seeing great numbers of birds in the morning and evenings out feeding along the food plots or open fields. Also the Roosters are starting breed the hens, so we should be finding some nests with a few eggs here in the next few days.

As long as the weather keeps the same throughout the Spring and we have a great summer, we will be seeing a large number of birds for this fall at Grandslam Pheasant Hunts. With one of the mildest winters we have ever seen all wildlife is doing great. There is still plenty of moisture in the ground with the last couple of rains we recieved recently. But with warm weather on the verge things could change dramaticly. This week some of the highs for temps will be in the mid 70s to even low 80s. Record high for this time of the year is 74 degrees.

Also this weekend we plan on burning old grass fields witch will help put nutrients back into ground and provide better nesting and cover. One other event we plan on doing this Spring, is filling in our large cedar groves where trees have died over the rough winters we have had. Then soon enough we will be working in the fields again setting up new acres for native grasses and then off to planting our crops.

We had a really good season in 2011. It was great to see old faces and meet new and interesting people. The winter here in SD has been extremely mild witch is great for all wildlife. Hopefully we will get some moisture yet or at least some during the spring. We will be posting more photos and videos here in the next few months. Keep up to date with us.

This summer has been quite an eventful one. Since the beginning of may we have almost had a little of 20 inches of rain. Early in June one night alone we had a flash flood that poured 10" in a short period. Ended up washing out a lot of roads and flooding a lot of crops.

Cody has been really busy with all the farming and keeping up with the spraying. He also helped some local farmers with the combining of wheat. Now he is working on putting up our new shop. Corbin has been trying to keep up with his daughter who is growing like a weed. He has also been helping out Cody with the farming and doing some up keep at the lodge along with building some new furniture. Curt and Lorie have been helping the two boys out as much as possible. Curt has been in the sprayer quite a bit this year. Lorie is now currently working on pickling her beats and beans.

The bird population is looking really good. We are starting to see a lot of young birds turning colors and also seeing some birds that are only a few days old. This fall should also be a great season for duck hunting, it doesn't matter where you turn, you see a duck and little ones on every small piece of water. The crops are also looking really good for the upcoming harvest season.

We are getting really excited for the upcoming hunting season and looking forward to seeing everyone again as well as meeting new people. There will be some busy days ahead with trying to finish up the new shop and finish a couple of projects that Curt wants done.

Thanks and keep on checking up on us

Corbin Korzan

GrandSlam Pheasant Hunts - Manager

605-680-1777

There has been many hours put in to get the crops in with the rush of rain coming every week. Next we will be working on transplanting some trees in our larger groves where the cedar trees collapsed after the large amount of snow fall. Also when the ground dries up we will be working on getting the food plots and crops sprayed.
Our two yellow british labs (Bud and Jazz) are doing great up at training we are excited to get them back and start preparing them for the up coming season.
Well with winter finally coming to an end we are off to a very wet spring. The water around the local area is at it highest point in the last 10 years. Even though we are so wet, on our few days of having dry weather, Curt and Cody have been out in the fields spreading fertilizer and discing up food plots. Also with large amount of water this is great for wildlife in many ways. First and foremost, the wildlife shouldn't have to worry about finding water on hot days. Second, should keep a lot of bugs around for the small chicks to eat. Third, is that with the high water, ducks and pheasant will nest on the higher grounds, so this will keep their nest from flooding out and not having to re-hatch.

As of now the pheasants are starting to move into their breeding stage. All of the hens are bunched up in the tree groves and the rooster are really starting to stand their ground and fight over the hens. With the harsh winter coming to an end, we have noticed a small decrease in the population. Though with a great start for the Spring, it looks as if we are off to the start of a great year. Winter pictures will be posted soon.

Corbin Korzan

GrandSlam Pheasant Hunts - Manager

First of all we would like to apologize for not keeping the blog updated this last hunting season. The 2010 season was an unbelievable event. It was great to see everyone back again and also great to see new customers as well.

For the year of 2011, we have had a rough winter so far. The amount of snow we have received is unbelievable, but on a good note the wildlife is doing great with the amount of left over feed from the food plots and the shelter belts give the birds great cover. Hopefully the rest of the winter will go well for us and the snow fall will be to a minimum.

Business at the lodge has been pretty steady. We are in the process of getting everyones dates filled in. We are down to a minimum of available hunting spots. So if your interested please make a quick call and we will try to see if we can fill a spot. Cody has been pretty busy as well, working on getting the farm equipment ready for this upcoming spring. Corbin and Ash have been pretty busy taking care of little Kinley. Corbin is also finishing up with working on all the Photo CD, DVD, Photo Book and Calendar orders. If anyone missed out on their orders please give us a call and we will be more than happy to help you out.

Also new to this year is GrandSlam Hunts has joined Facebook with all the millions of people online as well. We will be posting videos and other photos on Facebook as well. So if you are a member of the Facebook comunity and you find a photo of yourself or a friend you will be able to tag the photo to a profile.

As always we are looking forward to the upcoming year, so please keep up with as we make our journey to the upcoming 2011 Hunting Season.
